Ad Gefrin combines a whisky distillery with a museum devoted to the Anglo-Saxon palace once sited nearby at Yeavering, seat of the seventh-century King Edwin of Northumbria. Eileen and Alan Ferguson, uniting the Ferguson and Redpath families, co-founded the project in 2018 and opened the building on South Road in March 2023, drawing water from beneath the site in the Cheviot foothills. Five named local farmers grow barley exclusively for the distillery. Its first release, a blended whisky called Tacnbora, appeared in 2022 ahead of the site opening, followed by Thirlings Dry Gin in June 2023, flavoured with heather and pine from the Cheviots and sea buckthorn gathered on the Northumberland coast. The distillery won silver and bronze medals at the IWSC awards in 2024.
