Chris and Christine Garnett took on the shop on Helmsley's market place in 2008 and packed it to the ceiling with Yorkshire — pies, cheeses, bottles, and the national title to prove the method: Britain's Best Small Shop, awarded by the parliamentary small-shops group, with a Yorkshire Life food-retailer award in 2015 alongside. Their son Sam took the reins in 2020, the succession running through the family rather than the market despite a for-sale listing that once tested the town's nerves. Open every day from eight, in a market town that walkers, Herriot pilgrims and castle visitors all funnel through — the till has never needed a quiet season.
