Carlsberg Marston's closed Jennings in 2022 and Cockermouth assumed the worst about a brewery established nearly two hundred years ago at the meeting of its rivers; instead, Kurt and Rebecca Canfield bought the site and the brand in February 2025 and returned it to local, independent family ownership. The taproom relaunched on the fourth of July 2025 with head brewer Buster Grant drawing on the original on-site well and the historic yeast strain — Sneck Lifter and Cocker Hoop revived, Derwent Mild and Back Yam new — and managing director Chris France prioritising the area's free-trade pubs for first deliveries, a promise the demand promptly tested: supply was outstripped within weeks. Corporate closure to family revival in three years — the Rosemaund pattern, at Cumbrian scale, and the best news in this guide's northern file.
