Queenie Johns opened a grocery on Instow's Marine Parade in 1926; her great-grandson Anthony and his wife Sue run the business a century later, fourth generation, with a second shop across the estuary in Appledore since 2008 and a café there since 2012. Both branches work the same combination — delicatessen, butchery and wine shop, heavy on the local and the homemade — and the Farm Shop & Deli Awards named the pair its Retailer of the Year in 2015. The Instow original looks straight over the estuary sands to where its sibling trades.
