The Children's Bookshelf occupies a small unit on Gomond Street inside Hereford's Maylord Orchards, stocking books for readers from babies through to teenagers. Owner Duncan, known locally as the Book Man, built the shop's range around specialisms that general bookshops often overlook, including dyslexia-friendly and accelerated-reader editions, phonics titles, books dealing with feelings and emotions, and a manga section for older children. Staff give recommendations matched to a child's reading age and interests rather than simply pointing to bestseller tables. The shop closes Sundays and Mondays and keeps daytime hours the rest of the week, in step with the other independent traders inside Maylord Orchards. It remains one of the few UK bookshops trading solely in children's titles.
