The Georgian Theatre stands in Green Dragon Yard in Stockton-on-Tees, a Grade II listed building that began as a 1564 tithe barn before Thomas Bates converted it into a touring theatre in 1766, making it one of the oldest provincial Georgian theatres in England. It later spent decades as a sweet factory before the council took it on and reopened it as a community venue in 1980. Since 1993 it has been run by a local music collective, now known as Tees Music Alliance, and hosts live bands, spoken word, comedy, and youth music sessions in an intimate single-room auditorium with its own bar. A 2007 refurbishment added new dressing rooms and heating, and a further redevelopment reopened the venue in March 2017. It remains independently programmed rather than part of a touring circuit chain.
