The building began as the Sextry — the sacristy of Old St Chad's church — and has been an inn long enough that its claimed origin of 1428 has, as Wikipedia dryly notes, been assigned by some unknown authority; the Golden Cross name is first recorded in 1780, and the Grade II* listing is not in dispute. It runs today as a restaurant-led free house with one changing cask, usually from Hobsons, and five individually furnished rooms above. The Reeces ran it for twenty years before selling on retirement in 2022; the house has carried on under its own company since, individually held, tied to nobody.
