The Nag's Head sits on Russell Street a short walk from Reading's Coley district, run as a free house independent of any pub company. Twelve hand pumps carry a constantly rotating list of craft cask beers, drawn mostly from smaller breweries such as Siren, Field + Theory and North Riding, with mild, bitter and stout kept on permanently. A further wall of keg taps and thirteen ciders and perries round out the range. Food stays basic: toasties and filled rolls rather than a kitchen menu. The pub gets busy on Reading FC match days, given its position close to the ground, and keeps board games behind the bar for quieter afternoons. The pub has repeatedly placed in CAMRA's national Pub of the Year rounds, judged on cellar management rather than décor.
