Edward and Maurie Baines opened The Rutland Bookshop in 1979, during the Winter of Discontent, power cuts and a four-day working week. The shop occupies a tall, narrow building at the end of Uppingham's High Street West, stocking secondhand and antiquarian books across detective fiction, hunting, children's titles and general fiction, though nothing computing or technical. Edward, one of the founders, mans the counter most Saturdays between 11am and 4pm, while his daughter Lucy runs the shop the rest of the week. The premises make no claim to a polished finish, and staff welcome browsers into conversation over the stacks.
