Theatre Royal Wakefield stands on a site used for theatre since 1776, though the current building dates from 1894, designed by Frank Matcham as the Wakefield Opera House and now the smallest of his surviving theatres. It was a cinema and later a bingo hall for several decades before reopening as a theatre in 1981, and today it runs as an independent charitable trust staging drama, comedy and music.
