The Garthwaite family has farmed the land around Blacker Hall since 1901. Edward and Cheryl Garthwaite now run the farm shop and Barn Kitchen restaurant, while Edward's sister Mary and her husband Matthew work the surrounding 400 acres that supply it. The shop opened in 1999 in a converted cow barn on Branch Road, Calder Grove, selling beef and pork from the family's own Angus, Hereford, Simmental, Belgian Blue and Limousin herds, matured on the bone for a minimum of 21 days. Dry-cured hams and bacon are made on site alongside fresh-baked bread and farm-grown vegetables, and a children's activity area, Little Farmers, runs alongside the shop.
