Northlight occupies the former Shoulder of Mutton pub on Potternewton Lane, converted into a not-for-profit arts centre that opened in September 2022. The building runs a working gallery under the North Art name, showing rotating exhibitions of Northern artists alongside member showcases and collaborative shows. Downstairs, a café serves the same footfall that comes through for classes: pottery, jewellery-making, painting and life drawing sessions run most weeks, with a standing programme of pay-as-you-feel classes aimed at people who might not otherwise afford art tuition. The centre operates as a community interest company rather than a commercial gallery, and hires out its studio and event space for markets, meetings and workshops run by outside tutors. Life drawing sessions are taught by artist Boris Cruse among others. The result is one small site combining gallery, teaching space and café.
