The Chemic Tavern is a two-roomed Victorian local in Woodhouse, on the northern edge of Headingley, that takes its name from the adjacent Johnston's Chemical Works, a vitriol (sulphuric acid) factory demolished in the 1890s. The pub itself dates from the early 1840s and trades as a single, independently run free house at 9 Johnston Street. Leeds City Council listed it as an Asset of Community Value in 2015, recognising its role as a neighbourhood hub. Inside, the two small rooms host weekly folk sessions, an open mic night and a ukulele group, alongside a Wednesday quiz. A south-facing beer garden and a welcome for dogs, including treats for a resident pub cat, add to its character. No hot food is served, though outside takeaways are permitted.
