Sunny Bank Mills in Farsley began as a clothiers' cooperative mill in 1829, and has been in the Gaunt family since 1943 — the sixth generation, cousins William and John Gaunt, run it now. Rather than knock it down, they have kept it working in a new way: a gallery of contemporary art, a museum of the mill's own history, and studios for well over a hundred independent makers, artists and small businesses. It is a rare thing — a family-owned heritage mill that became a genuine creative quarter without losing its thread. Come for the gallery and the archive; stay for the makers. A model of what a Yorkshire mill can be next.
