Amanda Truman opened Truman Books on Town Street in June 2021, after twenty years working in the travel industry and a pandemic that closed off that career. The shop holds around four thousand titles, chosen by Truman and a team of four booksellers, spanning fiction, children's books, graphic novels, biography, poetry, food writing and a local-interest section covering Yorkshire and Leeds specifically. A small café counter at the back sells coffee and cake alongside the books, and the shop stocks cards and gifts rather than treating those as an afterthought. Signed copies and small-press editions get shelf space alongside mainstream stock. Each October, Truman Books works with The Old Woollen down the road to run the Farsley Literature Festival, bringing authors into the neighbourhood rather than sending readers into the city centre for events.
