Hyde Park Picture House opened on Brudenell Road in November 1914 and is one of the few UK cinemas retaining its original gas lighting, giving it a claim to being the only gaslit cinema still operating anywhere. The Grade II listed building underwent a lengthy restoration, closing in 2020 and reopening in June 2023 with a new basement screen added alongside the original balconied auditorium, plus an expanded café-bar and community room built into the Brudenell Road frontage. The cinema shows independent, arthouse and repertory film alongside mainstream releases, and hosts festival screenings and community events. It remains a single-site, charitably run cinema rather than part of a multiplex chain, and its ornate original interior, including the external box office, has been retained through the works.
