Fika North opened on Otley Road in Far Headingley in April 2019, the first venture for Gemma and Elis Williams after eight years working in the superyacht industry. The name borrows from the Swedish concept of fika, an unhurried pause for coffee and something sweet, and the room follows through with pale wood counters, house-baked patisserie and a vegan-friendly menu written up on a chalkboard. Coffee is single origin, pulled by trained baristas, and bagels run from breakfast through to mid-afternoon with fillings such as smoked salmon and pastrami. Cakes arrive daily from local bakers rather than a central kitchen. Weekend queues form early, though seating along the window bar makes for a reasonable wait. There is no booking system, so it operates on a first-come basis. British produce and Scandinavian pacing sit side by side.
