Roger Turnbull set up on Alnwick's Clayport Street in 1880, and the line has never let go: through sons and grandsons to Mark Turnbull, the fifth generation, who runs the business today with his son Dan making a sixth — a hundred and forty-five years of one family's meat, latterly expanded into a Northumbrian food hall on the town's edge that showcases the county's producers around the butchery at its heart. The National Craft Butchers named it the North East's best in June 2025, the freshest medal on a wall that has collected them for decades. The Percys have the castle; the Turnbulls, arguably, have the town.
