Fred Ayre opened the Nunhead bakery in 1955, and Vincent Ayre runs it now — the sixth generation of bakers in the family line, counting the trade back past the shop itself — with display counters that stretch around three walls in the old manner: bloomers and tin loaves one side, jam doughnuts of local renown another, and since 2020 a proper range of vegan cakes and pasties holding the third. The doors open at six in the morning because bakers' hours are not a branding exercise, and the reviews through this winter note customers walking over from Dulwich, which in south London terms is a pilgrimage.
