Benromach stands on the edge of Forres, founded in 1898 and mothballed in 1983 before the Urquhart family, owners of independent bottler Gordon & MacPhail, bought the site in 1993 and rebuilt it over five years. Prince Charles officially reopened the distillery in 1998, and it draws its process water from Chapelton Springs in the Romach Hills. Production remains deliberately small scale, run by a compact team, and ownership has stayed with the Urquhart family throughout rather than passing to one of the large multinational groups that control most of Speyside's famous names. The distillery sits alongside Gordon & MacPhail's wider whisky business, giving it access to decades of maturation and blending expertise built up in Elgin.
