Dave Shaw and his nephew Andy Benson set up Big Hand Brewing Co on a Redwither Business Park unit in Wrexham in 2013, running a 10-barrel plant themselves rather than taking on outside investors, a stance the brewery still sums up as no sugar daddy here. Shaw died in 2022 and Benson later moved on to other projects, with John Smith joining as a director and shareholder to keep the brewery trading. Beer goes out mainly to independent pubs and bars across North Wales and North West England rather than through national distribution deals. The brewery's cask ales and kegs continue to turn up at CAMRA-listed pubs and beer festivals across the region, keeping the founders' small-batch approach going after more than a decade of brewing.
