Cnapan has operated as a guest house and restaurant on East Street in Newport since 1984, run across three generations by the Lloyd and Cooper families. Judith Cooper has run the kitchen since the start, building menus around Welsh Black beef, Preseli lamb and shellfish landed in Newport Bay, including sewin, lobster and crab bought directly from local boats. The Georgian townhouse takes its name from Cnapan, a medieval Welsh ball game once played across North Pembrokeshire and considered a forerunner of rugby union. Five en-suite rooms sit above the dining room, and the kitchen closes on Tuesday evenings during the week. Cnapan has appeared repeatedly in the Good Food Guide and Good Hotel Guide, most recently picking up the Good Hotel Guide's 2024 Editor's Choice recognition for hotels on a budget.
