John McKenzie, a farmer and former helicopter pilot, launched GlenWyvis as a crowdfunded, community-owned distillery on his farm at Upper Docharty outside Dingwall. A share offer completed in seventy-seven days brought in around 2.6 million pounds, and a second offer took the shareholder count past three thousand, making it a co-operative rather than a private company. Production began under master distiller Duncan Tait, with spirit first running from the stills on St Andrew's Day 2017. The site runs entirely off hydro, wind, solar and biomass energy rather than the National Grid. GlenWyvis sits on a working livestock farm and has no visitor centre or shop on site, so its single malt whisky and GoodWill Gin are sold through stockists in and around Dingwall rather than direct to visitors.
