Gordon's Wine Bar has occupied the vaulted cellars beneath 47 Villiers Street since 1890, when Angus Stafford Gordon, one of London's last Free Vintners, opened its doors. The candlelit rooms, cut into the foundations of a Tudor watergate, still serve only wine, port and sherry alongside a short menu of cheese, pâté and cold cuts. Luis Gordon, a former chairman of a family sherry-shipping firm that for two centuries was the sole UK importer of Domecq, bought the business in 1974 after a lifetime in the wine trade; several of his six children worked behind the bar. Since his death in 2002 his widow Wendy Gordon has owned it, with their eldest son Simon now running day-to-day operations. A bespoke house wine was bottled for the 125th anniversary in 2015, and an adjoining deli opened in September 2024. It is widely described as London's oldest wine bar, with tables spilling onto Watergate Walk in summer.
