The Market Inn stands on Whitchurch Road opposite the site of Tavistock's former cattle market, from which it took its original name of the Cattle Market Inn when the Bedford Estate built it in 1860. It later traded briefly as the Mariner Inn before reverting to the Market Inn; Caroline Luke, a widow, was recorded as its first tenant in the 1860s, and the Brook family later ran the pub for forty years. Two regular ales and two guest ales are usually on the bar, with one of the regulars typically from a Devon brewery. The pub closed for a period in late 2024 before reopening in December that year under family management. It is registered as its own limited company rather than as part of a wider pub estate, and trades from the single Whitchurch Road building rather than a chain of branded sites.
