Cyril Withecombe opened the butcher's shop on Joy Street in Barnstaple in the early 1950s, and his son Robert, known as Bob, took over the business in 1965. The shop has since passed to the Wescott family, who continue trading under the Withecombe name and mark seventy years in business. The counter sells beef, lamb, pork, bacon and gammon, sausages made on the premises, poultry including chicken and duck, game and venison in season, and a range of cooked meats and barbecue cuts, with meat packs made up for freezer buying. A delivery service covers North Devon within a twenty-mile radius from Tuesday to Saturday, alongside click-and-collect for local customers. The shop has stayed at its original Joy Street premises through three changes of ownership rather than relocating or opening further branches, and continues to close on Sundays as it always has.
