Johnny Messum opened Messums West in 2016 after a two-year restoration of the monastic tithe barn at Place Farm, Tisbury — thirteenth-to-fourteenth-century, and reputedly the longest barn in England at some two hundred feet. Under that roof runs a full arts centre: exhibitions of contemporary art and making, ticketed talks, an art school added in 2021, a café called The Mess and a shop in a pod inside the barn. It is one of three Messums sites — a commercial gallery on Cork Street and a Lowestoft outpost opening in 2026 complete the family — with the Wiltshire barn run as its charitable heart.
