Nantwich Museum was founded in January 1980 by local people determined to keep a record of the town's history, and it has operated since from the former public library on Pillory Street, a building dating from 1888. Around a hundred volunteers run the museum's collections, front-of-house, research and education work, with no paid branch elsewhere. Displays focus on Nantwich's role in the English Civil War, particularly the 1644 battle, alongside the area's salt and cheese-making industries and its historic shoe, clothing and clock manufacture. The museum opens Tuesday to Saturday and closes over the Christmas period each year. It remains a single-site, independently run heritage trust rather than part of any wider museum group.
