John Eldridge and his Swedish wife Mathilda opened their roadside café at Hawksfield on the A39 in about 2013 and named it for the strongman in Pippi Longstocking. The mix is Swedish-Cornish: Mathilda bakes from family recipes — cardamom and cinnamon things, a rotating cake table with a gluten-free option in it — while the kitchen cooks breakfast and lunch from scratch, a specials board that travels well beyond the county, and the coffee is Origin's. A little outpost of fika culture on a Cornish trunk road; no bookings taken, just walk in.
