The BreadBasket

The Bread Basket has traded on Ryhope Street South since the early 2000s, run as a family bakery serving the Ryhope end of Sunderland with traditional bread, pies, pastries and cakes made on site. The shop keeps to a straightforward daily bake rather than a boutique menu, with stotties, teacakes and meat pies sitting alongside seasonal specials such as parkin and simnel cake. It has become the kind of counter where staff know regulars by their usual order, and where the till still rings up cash sales alongside card. Unlike the supermarket bakery counters that have replaced many small shops along the same street, The Bread Basket has stayed independently owned throughout, supplying school tuck shops and local cafes as well as walk-in customers from the surrounding terraces.
