Umbrella Vinyl

Umbrella Vinyl sells second-hand records from a shopfront on Valleyfield Street in Bruntsfield, opened in August 2023 by Laura and Josh Thomson with Nick Langford, three friends who met at a music festival in Hong Kong in 2015. The shop began as a reissue label in 2022, pressing a 7-inch single by Chris McGregor's Brotherhood of Breath before the trio found premises to sell physical stock. Racks cover jazz, funk, soul, Latin, afrobeat, reggae and soundtrack pressings, sourced through buying trips and collections bought from the public, alongside new releases from local artists and labels. Every record is cleaned on an ultrasonic machine and graded before sale, and in-store turntables let customers listen before they buy. The shop donates a share of proceeds to Tinderbox, a charity that places musical instruments in libraries.
