Basingstoke's local museum, free to enter, housed since 1984 in the former Town Hall designed by Lewis Wyatt, which once served as the town's Corn Exchange and Market. It is named after George Willis, clockmaker, antiquarian and former mayor, who was first honorary curator when the museum began at the Mechanics Institute in 1931. Galleries hold a 2.8 metre mammoth tusk, an 1898 wedding cake and a 1960s kitchen; the Sainsbury Gallery, created in 2009, takes touring exhibitions.
