Zillah Bell Gallery has occupied 15 Kirkgate in Thirsk since 1988, when John Bell and his partner Janie set up the space and named it after their youngest daughter, Zillah. The gallery is housed in a Grade II listed building opposite Thirsk Museum and shows contemporary paintings, prints and sculpture by British artists, with exhibitions changing through the year. John Bell continues to run the gallery, building relationships with artists over decades rather than treating the space as a simple retail outlet. The gallery opens Tuesday to Saturday from ten until five, and is closed on Sundays, Mondays and bank holidays. Its position on Kirkgate places it within a short walk of the market place and St Mary's Church, in a town known for its connection to James Herriot.
