The Barnes Fish Shop has traded on Barnes High Street since 2006, when the site was taken over and renamed after decades as an older, unrelated fishmonger. Fish comes through two routes: Billingsgate Market on the early-morning van, and a direct line from the Starfish Company's day boats out of Looe, Cornwall, meaning a Dover sole landed on a Sunday can be on the slab by Tuesday morning. Staff will fillet, skin, bone, portion, ring, dress or cook to order rather than sell whole fish only. The shop makes its own gravadlax to a house recipe and keeps informal hours beyond the posted times, staying open, as the counter puts it, if the lights are on. It is a working shop rather than a styled one, built around turnover and a regular local clientele rather than display.
