Behind the Wall has operated on Melville Street since 1985 as a family-run business, now serving the grandchildren of its earliest regulars. The building started out as a bra factory before becoming home to the Eglesbrech Brewery, whose name survives upstairs in the Eglesbrech Ale and Whisky Bar, a free house pouring guest ales from breweries such as Alechemy, Harviestoun and Oakham alongside a sizeable whisky list. The two small rooms upstairs keep a wood-burning stove and timber furnishings, set apart from the larger downstairs bar and restaurant, which runs food, screens for sport and a beer garden seating sixty. The upstairs bar holds a place in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide, drawing a different, quieter crowd than the ground-floor rooms below. Live bands and comedy nights run through the downstairs space most weekends.
