Crwst — the Welsh for the crust of a loaf — is what happens when a couple get serious about bread in a small Welsh town. Osian and Catrin Jones launched it in 2016 and opened the Cardigan café and bakehouse in 2018, and it has become one of the best-known bakeries in Wales on the strength of proper sourdough, brioche doughnuts and the cinnamon swirls people queue for. It is a bakery-café in the modern mould — brunch and good coffee at the front, everything baked from scratch out the back — but rooted in Cardigan rather than imported into it, and it has since spread to a handful of other sites along the coast. Awards have followed, but the doughnuts are the argument that matters. In a county not short of good food, Crwst is the place the town itself is proud of, and the reason a lot of visitors first stop in Cardigan at all. Get there early; the best things sell out.
