Golden Hare opened on Stockbridge's St Stephen Street in 2012 and won, in 2019, the biggest prize in the trade — The Bookseller's UK Independent Bookshop of the Year, presented by Ian Rankin, beating eight regional finalists to it. The owner is Sir Mark Jones, former director of the V&A and of National Museums Scotland, which lends the curation a certain museum-grade seriousness, with Julie Danskin managing the floor; the shop runs its own book festival and a podcast besides selling one of Edinburgh's best-chosen stocks. A beautifully fitted small shop that punches at national weight, in the New Town's most village-like quarter.
