C.R. Ashbee moved the Guild of Handicraft from London's East End to Chipping Campden in 1902; the experiment dissolved within a decade, but one bench never stopped. George Hart took over the silver workshop in 1912, his son Henry joined in 1930, and the fourth generation — David, William and Julian Hart, with Derek Elliott beside them — works the same trade at the old Guild premises on Sheep Street today, the last operating remnant of the Guild anywhere. Visitors are welcome to see the workshop, which looks properly worked-in because it is; a separate trust cares for the archive, but the trade itself has never needed rescuing. Ring ahead before a special trip.
