Surveyed
Algernon Freeman-Mitford, 1st Baron Redesdale, laid out this arboretum on the Batsford estate from 1886 using plant knowledge gathered during diplomatic postings in China and Japan, adding a watercourse, rockeries and a Japanese rest house. The 2nd Lord Dulverton expanded the tree and shrub collection after 1956, and since 1983 the site has been run by the charitable Batsford Foundation, with a garden centre attached.
