Innovation at Hebden Bridge Mill occupies a watermill on St George's Square whose foundation dates to an agreement between the Lords of the Manors of Wadsworth and Heptonstall in 1314. Left derelict after 1956, the mill was rescued from demolition by local businessman David Fletcher in the early 1970s and restored over decades using no external grants. The single-site business combines a riverside café-bar, serving morning coffee, lunches and afternoon tea on a terrace above the River Hebden, with a gift shop selling cards, jewellery and glassware. Power for both comes from the site's own waterwheel and a modern Archimedes screw installed in the river, making it one of the few hospitality venues in the valley to generate its own renewable electricity. The business remains under the Fletcher family's ownership.
