Marchpane has traded from 16 Cecil Court since August 1989, when antiquarian dealer Laurence Worms of Ash Rare Books opened the shop with his then director Kenneth Fuller as a specialist in children's and illustrated books. The stock runs from eighteenth-century moral tales published by John Newbery through Victorian and Edwardian illustrated editions to signed modern first editions by contemporary children's authors. The shop stocks extensive Lewis Carroll material, including numerous editions of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass alongside related ephemera, and is described by trade sources as the only shop in central London specialising solely in antiquarian children's books. It is run today under the name E. W. Marchpane Ltd, keeps regular shop hours on the pedestrian lane long known as Booksellers' Row, and takes no appointment for browsing, alongside a mail order and internet sales side of the business.
