Mill Garden Centre stands on the site of Barbauchlaw Mill, dating from the early thirteenth century on the edge of Armadale, some of whose original stonework survives on the site. The family-run centre has been growing plants there for around fifty years, employing qualified horticulturalists who grow a share of their own stock, including roses, shrubs, conifers, heathers, trees, perennials, alpines and grasses, alongside bedding and basket plants brought in from other Scottish growers. The centre is a stockist for specialist tree suppliers such as Frank P Matthews. An on-site cafe, the Garden Kitchen, serves breakfast and lunch with home baking and daily specials, and the grounds are dog-friendly for well-behaved animals on a lead. Mill Garden Centre opens seven days a week, from 9am on weekdays, with a small visitor car park. It remains independently owned rather than part of a national garden centre chain such as Dobbies or Klondyke, both of which also operate in West Lothian.
