Everett Philp began making pasties in the family's Hayle grocery in the 1950s, and Sammy Philp carried them into the local pubs; the family dates the business proper to 1958, and by the early sixties Sammy had converted an old warehouse on Foundry Hill into a dedicated bakery. He worked on into his nineties, and his grandchildren now carry the craft, with younger family members prepping ingredients before school. The pasties are still made by hand from local suppliers' ingredients, sold through seven shops that never leave west Cornwall — two in Hayle, then Marazion, Praze-an-Beeble, Camborne, Helston and Porthleven — and posted nationwide for everyone else. The East Quay shop stands by Hayle harbour.
