The WatershipDown Inn

The Watership Down Inn takes its name from Richard Adams's novel, set on the chalk downland that rises just behind the pub above Freefolk, outside Whitchurch. The core of the building dates to the 1830s, with three bedrooms above the bar and restaurant kept in keeping with the older part of the property; four further rooms were added in 2019 in a single-storey, eco-built garden annexe with tiled floors and a plainer, contemporary finish. Downstairs, a log burner sits in the bar, and the kitchen serves a seasonal menu built around Test Valley produce to residents and passing diners alike. Breakfast runs from 8am for both guests and non-residents. Wheelchair access covers the bar and restaurant, and dogs are welcome on leads throughout the ground floor, though not left unattended in bedrooms.
