Thomas Johnston Butchers has traded from 6 Cow Wynd since 1861, when founder Thomas Johnston first drove a horse and cart from his father's farm in Slamannan past this spot on his way to market in Falkirk. Four generations of the Johnston family have since run the shop, keeping to principles the founder set out: quality, value and service. The counter sells hand-made sausages, puddings and potted meats made to recipes passed down within the family, alongside fresh beef and lamb bought weekly from the Caledonian market in Stirling. Pork and bacon come from Robertson's Fine Food in Ayrshire. Alongside traditional cuts the shop now stocks stir-fry packs, oven-ready meals and other convenience lines for customers with less time to cook. The business has also opened a second shop, James Aitken butchers in Alloa, run by the same family. Open Monday to Saturday, 8am to 5pm; closed Sunday.
