35 North Contemporary Fine Art opened on North Road in September 2014, established by Sharon and John Whiting to give a dedicated home to a rolling exhibition programme of contemporary painting and print. The gallery stages up to ten exhibitions a year, mixing established names with artists earlier in their careers, in a single North Laine space rather than as part of a wider gallery group. Sharon and John continue to run the programme themselves, choosing the artists and hanging each show, which keeps the selection personal rather than dictated by a wider network of branches. The gallery sits among North Laine's cluster of independent shops and studios, a short walk from the Lanes, and has built its reputation on a decade of consistent, artist-led curation rather than passing trends.
