The funicular has run down the cliff from Babbacombe Downs to Oddicombe Beach since April 1926 — some 720 feet of track — and marked its centenary in 2026 with a ribbon cut by a descendant of the mayor who opened it. The council ran it for decades and still owns the freehold, but since 2009 the operation has been the community's: first a community interest company, now a charitable incorporated organisation with unpaid local trustees, carrying around a hundred thousand passengers a year. The track was renewed in a £250,000 refurbishment in 2023. Two pounds fifty down, card only, dogs free, and the last car back up leaves at a quarter to five.
