Housed in the Great Western Railway's 1883 goods shed on the old Coleford branch line, the museum opened to the public in 1988, built up by the late Mike Rees and a team of volunteers who continue to run it today. Exhibits trace the Forest of Dean's railway history from early tramroads through to the branch's 1970s closure, and include a restored Peckett 0-4-0ST locomotive, a working GWR signal box, a replica Victorian rail carriage and a Toad brake van. A miniature railway operates in the grounds on open days. The museum occupies a single site on Railway Drive and is run as an independent volunteer trust rather than as part of a national heritage rail network, relying on visitor donations and volunteer labour to maintain its collection.
