D31 Art Gallery began in 2020 when Doncaster artist Chinwe Russell called together a group of local painters, printmakers and sculptors who wanted year-round exhibition space rather than occasional pop-up shows. The gallery registered as a charity, and the name refers to the original idea that if enough artists took a turn on the rota, the doors could open every day of the month. Exhibitions rotate between member artists and visiting names, with work for sale alongside the shows rather than roped off from it. The gallery now trades from the Frenchgate Shopping Centre, close to Doncaster railway station, and stays free to enter. It opens Thursday to Sunday, ten until four, and is closed Monday to Wednesday. Staffing largely falls to the artist members themselves.
