QUAD opened in Derby's Market Place in 2008 as a combined cinema, gallery and studio complex, run as a registered charity rather than a commercial chain. Three screens show new and international film alongside a smaller room known as the Box for less mainstream titles, while the ground-floor galleries rotate contemporary art exhibitions independent of any national touring circuit. A café-bar serving pizza and barista coffee sits at the centre of the building, and profits from tickets and food sales are reinvested into the charity's programming rather than paid to shareholders. The building sits close to the market stalls in the Cathedral Quarter and houses artists' studios upstairs alongside its screening and exhibition spaces.
